Soot-free and low-NO combustion of Jet A-1 in a lean azimuthal flame (LEAF) combustor with hydrogen injection

The quest for aeroengine technologies capable of reducing soot and NOx emissions motivates the development novel burner concepts. present work contributes to this line research by presenting characterizing a low LEAF combustor fuelled with Jet A-1 hydrogen at atmospheric condition. inclined air injection from top manifold creates an azimuthal flow entraining sprays bottom produces, under favorable conditions, toroidal distributed reaction zone which we call LEAF. In LEAF, combustion fuel one atomizer provides vitiated environment spray next atomizer. flame topology characteristics are analysed means OH* CH* chemiluminescence, Mie scattering luminescence. is operated constant equivalence ratio varying thermal power air-to-liquid massflow (ALR) air-blast atomizers. significantly influenced atomization air, through its simultaneous effect on field. At mass rates, combination lower mixing larger Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) results in localized droplet non-uniform combustion. Consequently, these inhomogeneities process prevent formation lead topological transition tubular shape. study, show that injecting into can stabilise ALR. higher ALR, smaller SMD spread-out hot oxidisers evaporated fuel, flameless oxidation. Measurements NO exhaust very emission unburnt no emission, even absence preheating air.
